Frequently Asked Questions

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY CAKE?

Wedding Cakes - If your wedding is less than 9 months away, and you have some of the main styling elements in place, we can begin to design your cake. Most clients come in around 3 to 6 months before their wedding. Please bear in mind that dates in peak months of April - September can book up far in advance as I only take on 2-3 orders a week. However, I will always try my best to accommodate your cake order. Usually, less notice is required in off-peak winter months.

Celebration Cakes - For celebration cakes at least 4 weeks out is ideal, but I will do my best to accommodate last minute orders.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF ORDERING A CAKE?

It is recommended that you make an initial inquiry through the website or by email, giving me your date, delivery location, the number of servings and design ideas so I can give you a rough price guide. I will then book you in for a full consultation and tasting and provide a firm quote. To place your order, a 50% retainer is due, with the balance being due 1 month before your event.

For events other than weddings I often work by phone and email to finalize a design and quote.

HOW MUCH WILL MY CAKE COST?

The final price will depend on the number of servings and the complexity of the design. Each custom cake is quoted on an individual basis. There is a minimum order of $200 for celebration cakes and $500 for wedding cakes. Cakes finished in buttercream start at $5.50 per serving while cakes finished in fondant start at $6.50 per serving. Approximate prices can be given by email if the date and serving numbers are provided, and full quotes are provided after all of the details and the size are discussed, usually at the consultation.

CAN I HAVE A DIFFERENT FLAVOR IN EACH TIER?

Of course you can! I offer a wide variety of flavors to make sure everyone's taste is covered. Two flavors come standard with an order. There is a small surcharge per additional flavor.

CAN I TASTE YOUR CAKES?

Yes! No obligation cake tastings are offered to all wedding couples plus up to 2 additional guest. At the tasting, you will have the opportunity to sample 5 cake flavors of my choosing so that you can experience the quality, depth of flavor, and delight that is a Sweet Details Cake.

CAN I HAVE“DUMMY CAKE” TIERS OR A SMALLER CAKE PLUS SHEET CAKES TO REDUCE THE PRICE?

For most weddings, it’s just as easy to put all of your servings into the main cake. "Dummy cakes" are most useful if you love the idea of a really large cake, but only have a modest guest list. As most of the cost is in the labor of decorating, a five tier cake with only three tiers of real cake will still be closer to a five tier cake price than a three tier price.

When considering whether to go for a small cake plus sheet cakes, keep in mind the scale of the wedding and the visual impact you would like from the wedding cake. This option usually reduces costs significantly only for larger events. However, a small cake may look out of place at a big wedding.

I HAVE A PHOTO OF A CAKE I WANT, CAN YOU COPY IT?

I will certainly use photos of cakes as well as other items as sources of inspiration for your design. I would be delighted to work with you in creating something that speaks to who you are, the style of your event and a design that is uniquely yours.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY CONSULTATION?

Any materials you may have from your wedding can help in arriving at the perfect cake design. Invitations, fabric/color swatches, inspiration boards and images of your floral decorations will all assist in visualizing the look of your day and designing a cake to match.
